Lemme tell you about my commute, because it's actually an interesting drive that I take twice a day. Familiarity may breed contempt, but when we take a step back, the most everyday things are miraculous, right? It's got tunnels, it's got city views! It's got bridges over troubled waters! Or perhaps the waters aren't so troubled, but any body of water is pretty troubling for a car, so the bridges are a key element.

I live up in the Northern reaches of the Seattle area, where you don't have to go too much further before you run out of city. I drive to the Eastern reaches of Seattle, where you don't have to..etc and so on. My work is in a (somewhat) historic town called Issaquah, which is known for...having a dairy, being surrounded on 3 sides by large forested hills (most of which are parks/open space) and being very rainy. The whole area is very rainy, but Issaquah especially seems to get the storms funneled right up to it. My drive takes me north/south on one freeway and east/west on another. Along the way I drive right through the heart of downtown, past a nice view of the Space Needle (and saying "Hi Space Needle!" every time because if I don't, it will uproot its spindly legs and rampage through the city, you see. This is important.), over a very high bridge that spans Lake Union/Lake Washington, and then under parts of downtown including the Convention Center whose hanging gardens of ivy drip down over the freeway. As a kid, I thought this was absolutely magical. Past the two stadiums, the larger of which (Safeco? Where football is played?) is lit up every night with color-changing LEDs that fade from green to blue, which can only be for the Seahawks, I suppose.

Although the last couple days, it's just been red. Dunno what's up with that.

Turning East, I go through an impressive tunnel and then out onto the floating bridges that go over Lake Washington to Mercer Island, which is apparently the most densely inhabited island in a lake in the world. One of these bridges is also the 2nd longest in the world, though I couldn't tell you if that's Westbound or Eastbound. Mercer Island...I don't get to see much of it, because the freeway is down in a hole or in a tunnel. But it's a fun serpentine tunnel and, unlike the previous tunnel, is nice and wide and not scary to drive in. The first...well...there's no room to duck if anyone drives all crazy-like.

Then another bridge (not floating) to get back on the mainland, and up a grade into more hilly country, where many bits of cloud get stuck in the trees and look like cottonballs. Haven't seen this anywhere else. This is typically the area with thick ground fog, which is quite lovely, though I haven't seen it in a couple weeks as the weather has turned rainy.
And then I arrive in Issaquah! The whole way there are lovely views of the Cascades, the Olympics, Seattle, and Mt Rainier, not to mention the very pretty Lake Washington and Lake-I'll-Look-it-Up.

Sammamish.

Which should have something to do with sandwiches, but it doesn't. "Ish" means "water" so we've got lots of "ish" things around here. Doesn't mean we're flaky or indecisive, just means we've got lots of puddles and stuff.

Today, I was a bit late going home and as I drove, banks of streetlights turned off right when I arrived at them. The streetlights COULD have been turning off for the minivan who was going the same speed as I was, but I'm pretty sure that wasn't the case. They blinked off for me.

Because I'm special and unique.

Yes.

Hello, friends in Seattle, or friends who may be traveling to Seattle!

I found a little store in Edmonds, or rather they found me!, that sells fantasy and Steampunk goodies, and they're selling my stuffed dragons and costume wings via consignment. How awesome is that! They're called Otherworlds and are down in the Bowl of Edmonds, within walking distance of the Kingston ferry dock.

We also have an event coming up at the end of June - a Build-a-Dragon evening! It will be like Build-a-Bear, except with dragons! Come down and stuff, wire, and decorate your own draconic buddy (sewed by me) for the low price of $20 a draggie. Here's the Facebook link to the event, you'll need to RSVP as space (and my sewing tolerance) is limited: www.facebook.com/events/523510…

Hope to see you there!

It's Spring in this part of the world, and I've got dragons like you wouldn't believe. They just pop up like daisies once the weather starts getting warmer!

If you go to my Skydragons Etsy store right here:  skydragons.etsy.com and you use the coupon code SPRING, you can get 20% off on any dragons you want to adopt. Yes, that includes the custom guys, so go wild. The sale only lasts until the end of May, though! June 1st, and it's all over.

What? You don't want to buy stuff on Etsy? Well, just send me a note here and mention that you'd like 20% off for Spring. Check out the prices on Etsy beforehand so you know what you're getting into. :) Etsy can handle credit cards, but I'm a Paypal-only operation when it comes to direct sales. And no, I can't take points for dragons, sorry. dA sells many lovely things, but they don't sell groceries.

I'm really enjoying Springtime in Washington state - so many flowers! Phoenix had some flowers...I guess...but not like Washington does! I'm really enjoying those big bold tulips that most people have in their front yards. I wish I could get a bouquet and bring them home, but I know my cat would knock them over and then try to eat the tulips...He's very pretty, but not the smartest cat. Still, he's enjoying Spring, too! There are many more birds and squirrels in the yard, and he loves watching them from the windowsill perches.

www.kickstarter.com/projects/s… <-- See this link? This is the link to the Kickstarter for a project to make a graphic novel for Ratha's Creature - a fantasy book about prehistoric big cats that I absolutely adored back in middle school. I'm pretty sure some of you have read it and love it, too! They've got the author on board and they've got one of my buddies, Tod, working on the art team.

And it has been funded! Woohoo! Thanks to all who donated! This thing is gonna be awesome.
